Chapter Eight

KYLE WAKES UP in stages, stretching his legs out toward the foot of his bed then reaching his arms up until his knuckles knock against the wall. Finally, he opens his eyes and smiles as the light filters in through his curtains.

“Good morning to me,” he says.

He showers, still smiling about last night, and takes care of everything he was too tired to do after his scene with Aidan. His shirt and his pajama pants are dropped in his laundry basket, the now cold water is dumped in the sink, and the bowl and the empty glass are put in the dishwasher.

He keeps his good mood as he makes breakfast—eggs, toast, and tater tots—and he’s only a little surprised when his phone dings halfway through shoveling food in his mouth.

Aidan: How are you feeling this morning?

Kyle: Good. You?

Aidan: Nothing sore? Head in a good place?

Kyle rolls his eyes at his phone because Aidan isn’t here to see it. He appreciates the concern, and maybe it’s even a little sweet, but Kyle can handle himself. He’s met Doms who assume because he likes to sub it means he’s fragile. That’s bullshit is what it is, and he doesn’t think Aidan’s trying to coddle him, but he doesn’t like feeling hovered over.

Kyle: Everything’s good. You didn’t answer.

Aidan: I am quite well this morning. You’ll let me know if anything changes?

Kyle: Yes. When does your first class start?

Aidan: Five minutes. My students are all here except the one who is late every class. A product of poor scheduling. He only has ten minutes to cross the entire campus, and it’s a fifteen-minute walk if you have a brisk pace.

Kyle takes a picture of his breakfast and sends it with his next message.

Kyle: Bet my breakfast was better than yours.

Aidan: Does coffee count as breakfast? I’m turning my phone off for class, but I’ll turn it back on in an hour. Will you be okay?

Kyle: Yes. I’m going to eat breakfast, do some work, and probably drag Jenny over for lunch. I’ll send you pictures of that too.

Kyle doesn’t get a response to his last text, but he doesn’t expect one until later. He finishes breakfast and settles down in front of his laptop, ready to work. He’s clear-headed and focused the way he gets after a good scene. There’s no itch under his skin and he’s able to sit for an entire hour before he has to stand up and walk around.

He sinks even deeper into his project afterward, and he loses track of him. He’s just putting the finishing touches on his first draft of a mailing for a local energy company when there’s a knock at his door.

“Did you forget about me?” Jenny asks, barging in. She pauses in the doorway, surprised to see him sitting at his computer. “Someone’s motivated today.”

“I’m feeling good.”

“Uh-huh,” Jenny says. She nudges the door shut with her foot and fixes him with a look that demands answers. “Any reason?”

Kyle flushes bright red and holds a finger up for quiet so he can email Brett Panik with the draft of the mailing.
